On May 4 at the Houston Christian School eight students, teachers, legion members, ambulance members, MP Taylor Bachrach, Mayor Shane Brienen and Robbie Vierstra representing the local Dutch community gathered to remember the Canadian soldiers who lost their lives for the Liberation of the Netherlands. A brief speech was given by Nelinda Vandenberg then the students gave traditional Dutch cookies to the attendees and the meeting closed in prayer and a singing of Oh Canada. The students then participated a Symbolic Walk down to the Royal Canadian Legion, over to the Cenotaph, through the Steelhead Park and returning to the Houston Christian School. The eight students will be embarking on a trip to the Netherlands and pay respects to the fallen soldiers next year in the 80th anniversary of the Liberation. (Angelique Houlihan photo/Houston Today)
